AMLO and Trudeau talk about progress in the Mexico-Canada bilateral relationship; address energy issue

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and the Prime Minister of CanadaJustin Trudeau, talked this Tuesday morning about the business relationship between the two countries, “even in the energy sector” and on the humanitarian impacts of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Trudeau announced on his social networks that he took advantage of the phone call to invite López Obrador to participate in the campaign “Stand Up for Ukraine” to be held on April 9, which the Canadian government is convening together with the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to raise funds for Ukrainian refugees and displaced persons.

“President López Obrador and I share our concern about the humanitarian impact of the war in Ukraine and I invited him to be part of the #StandUpForUkraine event to support Ukrainian refugees and other people who have been displaced,” he wrote. Justin Trudeau on his Twitter account.

In a statement, the Canadian government announced that López Obrador and Trudeau took note of the bilateral progress that was achieved after the North American Leaders Summit that took place in November 2021.

They discussed the important contributions that Canadian investors make to the Mexican economy, including in the energy sector. They agreed to continue working together to counter the climate change“.

The dialogue between López Obrador and Trudeau coincides this Tuesday with the beginning of the discussion in the plenary session of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) of a project that seeks to declare the unconstitutionality action promoted by opposition senators against the reforms to the Electricity Industry Law (LIE) that sought to strengthen the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) and reduce the participation of the Private Initiative in the generation and commercialization of electricity.

It should be remembered that this week also began the analysis in committees of the Chamber of Deputies on the electrical reform promoted by the federal government and that has provoked criticism from businessmen and officials from the United States, Canada and the European Union, who have warned of various effects on their investments in the energy sector in Mexico.
