Argentina joins the International Energy Agency as a member

The Argentine Government signed its adherence as an associate member of the International Energy Agency (IEA, acronym in English), was officially reported on Thursday, at a time of acceleration in projects in the sector for productive and macroeconomic reasons.

The Minister of Economy, Martín Guzmán, was the official who formalized the procedure on French soil, where he traveled earlier this week to reschedule debt maturity with the Paris Club.

“We are pleased to join the IEA as an associate member. We look forward to working together in an articulated manner,” the official said. “It is a good time for Argentina to join the IEA, because the acceleration of the development of the energy sector is a priority for our Government.”

The IEA is a global organization, created by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) after the 1973 oil crisis.

In Argentina, the so-called Vaca Muerta formation stands out, fourth world reserve of shale oil and second of unconventional gas.

Guzmán took advantage of the appointment for a work meeting with his counterpart from Mines and Energy of Brazil, Bento Albuquerque, with whom he analyzed the regional energy integration agenda, both countries being giant partners within the customs union Mercosur.

“It is essential to work in an articulated way to strengthen the energy integration of our South America, giving rise to a market of a larger scale that results in a significant increase in production, an improvement in energy security in the region and a decrease in production costs that increases the productivity of the regional industry Guzman said.

On the agenda, it was agreed that the Argentine minister travel to Brazil on April 8 to continue the dialogue with Albuquerque, an opportunity in which he will meet with his colleague from Economy, Paulo Guedes.
