PAHO estimates inter-epidemic period in the country

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) estimated that Mexico could enter an “inter-epidemic” phase (a period with low levels of infections) due to the fact that fewer cases of coronavirus have been registered in the last six weeks.

Sylvain Aldighieri, PAHO’s Incident Manager for Covid-19, explained that our country reported a 36% drop in the number of active cases and a 17% drop in deaths in the last week, so that, with around of 23,000 active cases, it can be considered that Mexico is approaching this inter-epidemic period, without failing to take into account the possibility of the emergence of new variants of the virus.

At the same time, he commented that there is a decrease in hospital occupancy: in relation to general beds under 17% and with ventilators it was reduced to 9.7%, for which, he added, “at the moment there are 31 states of Mexico with a traffic light of low-level epidemic risk, in green, and only one entity is in yellow (Querétaro), of medium risk, according to the criteria established by the federal Ministry of Health”, he clarified.

However, given the panorama, he recommended not to loosen preventive measures, since he emphasized that “the risk of reactivation of the pandemic is not ruled out, given the instability of the international situation and a possible emergency due to new variants of the SARS-CoV virus. two”.

On the other hand, Jarbas Barbosa, deputy director of PAHO, stressed that in Mexico more than 65% of the entire population has been immunized with more than one dose and it already has little more than 60% with both doses, due to the above, PAHO indicated that Mexico is not yet part of the list of 14 Latin American countries that have managed to immunize 70% of their population against coronavirus.

Low hospital occupancy

The federal Ministry of Health reported this Wednesday that hospital occupancy was reduced by 92% when comparing the figures reported during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic, in January 2021.

In its daily technical report on the situation of the Coronavirus pandemic in Mexico, the federal agency also reported that so far this epidemiological week, a 41% reduction in the number of estimated infections can be seen.

The data indicates that between March 6 and 9, the occupancy of general beds and beds with mechanical ventilators remains unchanged at 13 and 10%, respectively.
