Plenert has three children. The oldest is 12 years old and was eager to get vaccinated, even saving his vaccine for his birthday as a gift. But her youngest children are nine and seven years old. She says they have been closely monitoring the approval process.

“They are very excited to be vaccinated and protected because they found COVID very stressful. They know what’s going on. “

She says her family can now breathe a sigh of relief.

“I was really relieved when my husband was vaccinated, I was truly relieved when my oldest son was vaccinated, and now I’m really looking forward to having the other two protected,” she says.

“My middle son has special needs with a slightly higher risk profile, which also makes a difference, and we also have family members who are very high risk, so we have been more cautious.”

From canceled Christmas concerts to abnormal school lunch hours, Plenert says, for her children, vaccinations mean another step toward normalcy.

“The opportunity to have those really exciting benefits of being a school-age kid is back. That’s exciting for them, ”says Plenert.

Manitoba pharmacists brace for Monday

Ken Humeniek, a Winnipeg pharmacist with three locations in the city, said that when he learned of Health Canada’s approval, his phones started ringing non-stop.

“I hear, ‘Here’s my son’s name, please call me immediately when I can get this injection for my son,’” Humeniek said.

He decided to create a waiting list for when the vaccines hit his stores.

“Wow, I got a hundred phone calls (Friday). I have about 104 children on a call list waiting for the vaccine. “

Health Canada’s approval is good news for more than just your professional life.

“Personally, as a parent and as a pharmacist, I have been waiting to vaccinate the very young because that is a large segment of our population that has not been vaccinated.”
