The increase will affect 301,000 workers, 166,000 of them women, who work in areas such as retail and restaurants.

Tipped employees will see their minimum hourly wage increase from $10.80 to $11.40.

Boulet said the goal of the increase is for the minimum wage to be 50 percent of the average hourly wage paid in Quebec, which is estimated at $28.47.

The minister said he had tried to strike a balance between encouraging Quebeckers to take a job and not enticing them to drop out of school.

For years, Quebec’s major unions have called for the minimum wage to be increased to $15, and recently increased that demand to $18 an hour.

Ontario’s minimum hourly wage was set at $15 on January 1.
