Youth centers: a campaign to demand more funding

The youth centers of Quebec launched a mobilization campaign on Thursday to urge the Legault government to remedy their screaming underfunding.

The “Plus pour nos ados” operation, which will continue until March 13, aims to obtain the support of the population for the “financial” demands of the Regroupement des maison des jeunes du Québec.

The Regroupement believes that the “serious underfunding” of youth centers directly threatens their mission with adolescents.

More than 45% of youth centers had to close or reduce their opening hours in 2021 due to lack of staff, alarms the RMJQ.

The organization recalls the importance of these structures in breaking isolation and promoting the mental and physical health of young people hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The subsidies granted to youth centers were already insufficient long before the health crisis. Today, after two years of the pandemic, our teams are out of breath and the consequences of underfunding are being felt every day,” said Nicholas Legault, general manager of the RMJQ, in a press release.

“We absolutely need the support of the government to support our mission,” added Mr. Legault, specifying that the campaign will be accompanied by a declaration to be signed.

Once signed by as many people as possible, it will be submitted to the government on the sidelines of the unveiling of the 2022 budget.
