YOU SAID IT: Enough pointless talk

Here are today’s Ottawa Sun letters to the editor.

ENOUGH POINTLESS TALK

Re: Gunman kills at least 19 children and two adults at Texas elementary school, online edition, May 25

This letter is not to diminish or belittle the loss of any victim, nor the pain or grief of survivors. It is an indictment of supposed leaders’ continually offering little more than empty words that accomplish nothing beyond telegraphing fake concern. We all know talk is cheap. Actions count.

Yet another tragic school massacre in Texas with more than 20 dead, most children. Yet another phoney outpouring from authorities — pious thoughts, useless condolences and insincere calls for action to “do something” to prevent further senseless killings.

I say useless condolences because they are useless. They will not bring back the victims, nor ever lessen the pain of surviving families and friends. I say insincere calls for action because we’ve all heard these demands how many times after past shootings? I’ve lost count. Nothing ever gets done and history repeats itself.

Hypocritical politicians, NRA devotees, those who champion the right to bear arms and countless others all know what needs to be done to solve this problem.

Groups and individuals must stand up to and defeat the gun lobby, those who support “bear arms.” Until they roll up their sleeves to change “bear arms” to “bare arms,” politicians need to stop their disingenuous expressions of sympathy and unfulfilled calls for “action.” These authorities must actually take the actions they know need to be taken. Until they act, this letter is to remind each of them, it is they who are ultimately responsible every time one of these tragic shootings occurs.

Put up or shut up.

GIVE NEW LEADER A CHANCE

Article content

As a longtime Conservative voter, I am concerned with how the party is being run. Seems to me that, no matter who the next leader is, if he doesn’t show well in the next federal election, he will be thrown out, and whatever camp (right or moderate) that didn’t have their preferred candidate will have the knives out.

I admit, originally I was on the fence with Erin O’Toole, but understood his methodology of trying to move the party to the center and thus pick up that huge swath of voters in the middle ground.

We have to give the new leader of the party a chance. Honestly, at the end of the day I would vote for a trained chimp if it meant we got rid of the New Liberals and their messiah!

KINSELLA SUFFERING FROM PDS

It is quite apparent that Warren Kinsella suffers from PDS (Poilievre Derangement Syndrome). I personally support Leslyn Lewis, so I do not have an oar in this race, but the Sun columnist has been relentless in his condemnation of the Conservative leadership hopeful, so much so that he has been downright nasty in his description of the Ottawa-area MP.

Progressives like Kinsella are basically afraid that Pierre Poilievre might actually win this race and go on to be PM. But, then again, Warren supported Joe Biden, so I rest my case.
