While this company lacks an official Canadian presence, Xiaomi has overtaken Apple to become the world’s second-largest smartphone maker, according to data from Canalys, a global technology market analyst firm.
According to the study, Xioami now has a global market share of 17 percent, which places it behind Samsung, which has held the number one spot for the past few years; currently, the South Korean company has a 19 percent market share.
According to the study data, Xiaomi has seen a huge year-on-year growth of 83 percent, far outpacing Samsung’s 15 percent and Apple’s 1 percent.
Xiaomi’s inexpensive Redmi Note 10 Pro device, combined with a number of strong flagship phones like the Mi Ultra and Mi 11, are some of the reasons why the company has done so well. Additionally, Xiaomi’s entry into other markets, including Latin America, Africa, and Western Europe, has also helped push the China-based smartphone giant to number two.
The last company to overtake Apple was Huawei, however, the manufacturer was prevented from using American applications and parts, significantly slowing its international growth.
With such strong growth, Xiaomi may soon overtake Samsung. It is unclear if Xiaomi ever has plans to start selling its smartphones in Canada.
