WWE Raw results: winners, news and notes on the return of John Cena

WWE Raw in Laredo, Texas announced the return of John Cena to celebrate his 20th anniversary with WWE.

John Cena’s return featured countless tributes from WWE legends and Hall of Famers, including current AEW stars Bryan Danielson, “Big Show” Paul Wight and Chris Jericho. Cena then appeared live, after a Vince McMahon performance of course, to thank the WWE Universe and those who inspired him.

WWE Raw was a legitimate sale at the Sames Auto Arena as more than 4,500 tickets were moved since Cena’s announcement per WrestleTix. WWE Privileged Account wrestlingVotes reported that backstage morale was high for Cena’s return to WWE given his leadership and “positive presence”.

Last week’s WWE Raw telecast garnered 1.986 million viewers.

Riddle wins MITB Battle Royal

WWE Raw kicked off with a victory lap for John Cena backstage, and luckily, R-Truth was on hand to celebrate his “childhood hero.”

If Riddle is no longer allowed to compete for the WWE Universal Championship, what the hell is he doing in a match to get a chance to do just that?

Battle Royal subplots included Jinder Mahal eliminating Shanky and the cowardly Miz costing AJ Styles an opportunity by faking a knee injury just to eliminate him.

Riddle qualified for Money in the Bank, and I can see him or Drew McIntyre winning MITB and finally using the briefcase to challenge Roman Reigns at Clash at the Castle. If this is how McIntyre plans to use Money in the Bank, he would rather Riddle win it.

Montez Ford right hey use

The Street Profits had a fun, if not cheesy, exchange backstage as Cena gave them a “never give up” pep talk. There is no way Montez Ford was losing after this.

This week’s Street Profits team looked like the Orlando Magic, but unfortunately, they’re in Texas tonight.

Montez Ford almost went through the barricade while throwing a suicide dive at Jey Uso.

Miz’s interview

The retrospective of John Cena’s career, which featured The Big Show and Bryan Danielson, was followed by The Miz appearing live when I’m sure many people thought this was the time John Cena would return.

The Miz is wearing his Logan Paul fit on the same day Logan Paul is reported to be training for a wrestling match, possibly at SummerSlam. I hardly think it’s a coincidence.

Right on cue, The Miz announced that Logan Paul would be returning to WWE for SummerSlam.

WWE continues to try to book Logan Paul as a babyface and I can’t think of a bigger casting mistake in wrestling.

AJ Styles defeated. The Miz by Countout

Couldn’t WWE wait six days for a Miz-AJ Styles match at Money in the Bank?

Maybe it was a good thing that Miz and Styles had a TV fight, because they seemed to be on two completely different pages and maybe they needed to work out some issues.

After The Miz walked out of this match, Corey Graves hilariously encouraged The Miz to get back in the ring, saying that there was still plenty of time even though he was at the top of the ramp at the count of nine.

Theory cut a fantastic backstage promo on John Cena after this match.

Bianca Belair and Carmella face off

Bianca Belair was great in her promotional segment calling out Carmella saying she “doesn’t respect herself.” The line got a great reaction from the live crowd.

Bianca Belair called Carmella, who predictably declined in a limited promotional segment.

Liv Morgan def. alexa happiness

Just when it looked like WWE was going with an Alexa Bliss-Liv Morgan tag team, WWE aired a backstage promo between the two, where they both admitted they didn’t like each other.

Asuka’s shocked reaction to Liv Morgan achieving this victory was priceless.

John Cena speaks

No post-investigation WWE Raw would be complete without a live appearance from Vince McMahon, who appeared alongside the WWE locker room to personally introduce John Cena.

Cena showed up at the top of the hour, and I’m surprised they didn’t have a John Cena countdown.

John Cena gave a heartfelt promotion/acceptance speech where he talked about all the people and families that inspire him. Surprisingly, there wasn’t a huge angle that came out of this promo. Maybe he’ll come back for the Theory segment?

Bobby Lashley def. alpha academy

Bobby Lashley continues to be dominant as he chases the United States Championship, which is in stark contrast to how Mustafa Ali was booked. One week after dusting off three WWE Superstars in one glove, he defeated two WWE Superstars in a handicap match.

After the match, Alpha Academy and Austin Theory attacked Bobby Lashley. It shone, by the absence of him, John Cena. It didn’t matter, Lashley fought them all alone.

Exclusive Cody Rhodes Interview

Cody Rhodes hyped every WWE Superstar better than WWE over the past year. After this segment, Seth Rollins, who appeared to be wearing his wife’s sunglasses, laughed to the John Cena theme song.

Becky Lynch wins the MITB Elimination Match

Becky Lynch was dominant throughout this match, eliminating one WWE Superstar after another. Given the way she has been booked, as close but no cigar, this was setting her up for her to get all but the final pinfall.

Becky Lynch didn’t score every pinfall, but she ultimately won this match, which included her impressive Manhandle Slam delivery to Doudrop from the second rope.
