The woman was walking near Main and East Pender Streets in Chinatown around 4:20 pm Tuesday when she was assaulted, said police.

The attacker allegedly stuck a hypodermic needle in the woman’s leg, said Vancouver Police Department spokesman Const. Steve Addison. “It appears there was no prior interaction between the victim and the suspect, and the assault was completely unprovoked.”

The victim contacted police immediately and kept an eye on her alleged attacker until officers arrived.

Kayla Elizabeth Kelly, 27, has been charged with assault with a weapon. She is scheduled to appear in downtown community court on March 22.

A similar incident occurred in November when a 23-year-old woman was stabbed in the leg by a woman wielding a dirty needle near East Pender and Abbott Streets. In that incident, Cathleen Cunningham, 35, was charged with an aggravated assault.
