The force on Tuesday announced the city’s first female police chief will retire from the Windsor Police Service on March 31.

“I have loved my time at the Windsor Police Service and I love the communities of Windsor and Amherstburg,” Mizuno said in a written statement. “It has been an honor and privilege to lead this organization and I want to thank all of our members at the Windsor Police Service. I also want to thank our communities for your support over the past 2.5 years and the trust and confidence you have given to the Windsor Police Service, without which, we would not function.”

Deputy Chief Jason Bellaire will serve as acting chief starting April 1 until a formal recruitment process for a permanent chief is completed.

“On behalf of the board, we acknowledge Chief Mizuno’s accomplishments during her tenure ensuring that community safety and well-being were always her top priority,” said Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens. “Pamela has led the service through significant challenges over the past 2.5 years. Her work by her has resulted in a well-respected police service by citizens throughout the City of Windsor and the Town of Amherstburg. The board wishes her all the best in retirement.”

Mizuno was the first woman to hold the top spot at the Windsor Police Service in the organization’s 152-year history. She became chief of police in October of 2019 after serving as acting chief for three months following the retirement of Al Frederick, who was chief for eight years.

Mizuno joined the force in 1994 and worked in several units, including patrol, media relations, and investigations. She worked on the police service’s Human Rights Project from 2011 to 2014, and she was the first officer appointed to the provincial proceeds of crime unit.

She became the first woman in Windsor to hold the rank of deputy chief in 2018.
