Wimbledon 2022: Emma Raducanu wins center court debut as Andy Murray starts with victory

Follow all the action as Wimbledon continues with Rafael Nadal, Iga Swiatek and Serena Williams in action on day two.

Today marks the return of Nadal, who is back for the first time since 2019 and has just opened a lead in the race to end with the most men’s Grand Slam titles with 22. The other finalist from SW19 last year, Matteo Berrettini, is out of the tournament after testing positive for Covid.

The women’s singles favorite is World No.1 Iga Swiatek and she opens her championships on center court against Jana Fett, taking the traditional slot on the first Tuesday of play after defending the sudden retirement of women’s champion Ash Barty. There’s more Wimbledon royalty in action on day two with Williams making her long-awaited comeback. The seven-time Wimbledon champion is back in singles action after being cruelly forced to withdraw from her first-round match at SW19 last year and the 40-year-old, third on Center Court, is looking to ignite her comeback of a hamstring injury when she faces Harmony Tan.

Elsewhere, there are intriguing matches involving Coco Gauff and Elena-Gabriela Ruse on court two, while the charismatic Nick Kyrgios hopes to cement his status as a dark horse this year with a first-round encounter against Paul Jubb on court two. three. Ymer replaces Berrettini

Matteo Berrettini’s withdrawal is a huge blow to the tournament, but it makes Rafael Nadal’s chances of winning that much better.

Berrettini reached the final last year, where he lost to Novak Djokovic in four sets, and looked to be in brilliant form in the build-up to Wimbledon beating Andy Murray to win the Stuttgart Open title.

He then retained his title at Queen’s a few weeks ago and would have come to Wimbledon having won 20 of his last 21 grass-court matches.

Berrettini was the third favorite to lift the Wimbledon trophy, after Djokovic and Nadal, and has been officially replaced in the draw by lucky loser Elias Ymer of Sweden.

Berrettini had put up half of Nadal’s draw and was on a collision course with the Australian and French Open champion. Without Berrettini to face Nadal’s path to the final is a little easier.
