Although Canadian tennis player Leylah Fernández suffered a disappointing defeat in the US Open final on Saturday, congratulations on her performance came from around the world.
Fernandez, 19, from Laval, Quebec, lost to 18-year-old Briton Emma Raducanu 6-4, 6-3; none had appeared in a Grand Slam final before their fateful match at New York’s Arthur Ashe Stadium.
In his postgame speech, which was held on the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Fernández thanked the city: “I hope I can be as strong and resilient as New York has been in the last 20 years.”
