What are the 20 professions that have best resisted the covid? And the 20 that have suffered the most?

The pandemic has meant an earthquake for the working market which has distorted the flows of supply and demand. The profiles that until before the virus were the most sought after in Catalonia are not exactly the same two years later. The restrictions have prevented or limited certain activities and the consumption part of the population has moved from one product to another. And it is that what during the months of confinement some did not spend in restaurants they went on to spend on purchases for internet and this caused that for a time there was more demand for carriers than waiters, for example. The new needs derived from the pandemic, from health workers to laboratory workers, have also triggered the employability of certain profiles.

The Observatori del Treball i Model Productiu has updated its professions search engine, a tool that mixes several indicators to establish the best professions in Catalonia. Its formula combines, on the one hand, the degree of demand from companies of this type of profile. The second element is the quality of that job. And the third is the competition that exists between professionals willing to do that job. Crossing those three variables, the Department of Labor set a score from 0 to 100, with 100 being the best scenario and 0 being the worst.

If one compares how this index has evolved over the last three years, it can be seen that tourism-related occupations are those that have fared worse after the outbreak of the virus. Strong restrictions on mobility, collapse of foreign tourism and drastic reduction in airport operations explains that profiles such as flight attendants, pilots or tourist companions are the three professions that have suffered the most in demand and conditions from this pandemic. Restoration, also very affected by these same reasons, reduces the employability of chefs, waiters or food and drink classifiers; among others.

On the other side of the scale are those professions typical of sectors that not only could continue their activity, but it was reinforced. This is the case of family doctors or process control technicians, teachers and special educators or psychologists. Those essential services or professions related to health or education have experienced a boom, as shown by the employment data of recent months. And, for their part, new technology and IT professionals have continued their upward trend and, pandemic aside, they continue to emerge as some of the most desirable jobs in Catalonia.
