The Toronto Marathon, subway closures and more than a dozen planned protests will make navigating the downtown core an exercise in patience this weekend.
Here is a list of the various road closures expected:
SATURDAY, APRIL 30
TTC
There will be no subway service on Line 1 (Yonge-University) between Lawrence and St Clair stations due to work on the Eglinton Crosstown LRT construction project. Shuttle buses will operate.
SUNDAY, MAY 1
TORONTO MARATHON
The Toronto Marathon starts at 7:30 am at Yonge and Sheppard in North York and there will be a number of rolling closures as it weaves its way down to the finish line at Exhibition Place. The event benefits many local charities including The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation, and Sick Kids and organizers hope to exceed $1.2 million this year.
The marathon road closures will also impact several TTC bus and streetcar routes
OPMF CEREMONY OF REMEMBRANCE
The Ontario Police Memorial Foundation will hold its 23rd Ceremony of Remembrance at the Ontario Police Memorial site on Queens Park Crescent in Toronto at 11 am This will mark the first full regimental, in-person ceremony which was put on pause the past few years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The ceremony honors and pays tribute to Ontario’s fallen police officers who died in the Line of Duty.
The following road closures will be in effect from 8 am to 2 pm:
- Queen’s Park Crescent East from Bloor Street West to College Street
- Queen’s Park Crescent West from Bloor Street West to College Street
- Hoskin Avenue from St. George Street to Queen’s Park Crescent West (local only)
- Grosvenor Street from Surrey Place to Queen’s Park Crescent East (local only)
- St. Joseph Street to be closed at St Thomas Street and traffic will redirected to Bay Street West (local only)
- Charles Street to close at St. Thomas Street and traffic will be redirected to Bloor Street West (local only)
DEMONSTRATIONS/PROTESTS
There will also be a large police presence as multiple protests and demonstrations are planned in the downtown core. Police are not advising residents to stay out of any specific areas but cautioned motorists should anticipate delays due to a number of rolling road closures.
