Cale Makar scored his first career hat trick, Nathan MacKinnon scored and added three assists, and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Detroit Red Wings 7-2 on Wednesday.

MacKinnon has had at least one point in his last 31 home games.

Makar is the fourth defenseman to score a hat trick in Avalanche history, joining Sandis Ozolinsh, Uwe Krupp and Bryan Fogarty. Makar also added an assist to his record.

Now at 109 points, MacKinnon scored four points in a second straight game.

Artturi Lehkonen, Jonathan Drouin and Jean-Luc Foudy also hit the target. Mikko Rantanen had four assists in the victory and goaltender Alexandar Georgiev stopped 27 shots.

Robby Fabbri and David Perron scored the goals for the Red Wings. Alex Lyon started the match in front of the visitors’ cage, but gave way to James Reimer in the third period.

The Avalanche were down 2-1 in the first period, but then scored six straight goals.

Killorn scores game-winning goal as Ducks beat Senators

Alexander Killorn scored the winning goal early in the third period and the Anaheim Ducks defeated the Ottawa Senators 2-1 on Wednesday night.

Rookie Olen Zellweger had an assist on Killorn’s goal.

Ryan Strome scored in the victory and goaltender Lukas Dostal stopped 29 shots.

Mark Kastelic scored the goal for the Senators, who lost a fifth straight game. Mads Sogaard blocked 14 shots.

The Senators had two excellent chances to tie the score in the final minute of regulation, but Dostal confirmed his team’s victory with saves against Tim Stützle, as well as Jakob Chychrun on the return shot.

Dostal made 18 saves in the third period.

Ducks forward Troy Terry was removed from the lineup about 15 minutes before the start of the game due to an upper body injury.

Kastelic gave the Senators the lead after just 2:44 of play.

Strome tied the score early in the second period with his 10th goal of the campaign.

Ducks forward Jakob Silfverberg competed in an 800e career game in the NHL. The Senators were selected in the second round of the 2009 draft.

Maple Leafs win against Sabers

Auston Matthews scored his 54e goal of the season at 4:20 of the overtime period and the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Buffalo Sabers 2-1 on Wednesday night.

William Nylander scored in regulation and goaltender Ilya Samsonov blocked 23 shots in the victory.

Victor Olofsson scored for the Sabres. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 25 saves.

Matthews took a pass from teammate Mitchell Marner and scored the game-winner in overtime.

Just before, Samsonov made a superb glove save against Tage Thompson.

Nylander opened the scoring 2:29 into the second period. It was his 34e net of the countryside.

Olofsson tied the game at 6:31, beating Samsonov with his fifth goal of the season.

Sick, defenseman Jake McCabe was not in the Maple Leafs lineup.
