We verified the facts of the campaign claims of the federal party leaders. How honest were they? This is what we found

The Star’s election verification project was launched with the August call for elections as a way to keep Canadians informed and hold leaders to account before the federal elections on September 20. With the rise of post-truth politics in the US and around the world, touted by wildly dishonest figures like the former president of the United States, Donald Trump, Star verifier Lex Harvey wanted to see how Canadian politicians stack up, one leader at a time.

  • First was Annamie Paul, Leader of the Green Party:

I checked everything Ecological Leader Annamie Paul said for a week. this is what I found

Over the course of a week, Harvey watched every word of his press conferences, tuned in to his radio and television appearances, and kept up with his social media, all while verifying every claim he made. How honest was Paul? Read the story to see how many claims were true, false, or exaggerated, and use our tool to filter claims by topic.

  • In the second week of the campaign, our fact-checker turned his attention to NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh:

I checked everything the NDP leader Jagmeet Singh said for a week. this is what I found

Compared to Paul, Singh spoke about a much broader range of issues affecting Canadians, from fossil fuel subsidies and the carbon tax, to long-term care reform and universal pharmaceutical care, to the housing crisis and cell phone prices. Was he more or less honest? Read the story to see how many claims were true, false, or exaggerated, and use our tool to filter claims by topic.

  • Week three of the electoral campaign, Conservative leader Erin O’Toole he was in the spotlight.

I checked everything Conservative leader Erin O’Toole said for a week. this is what I found

O’Toole confronted liberal, bloc and NDP leaders during the first debate in French. His statements at the debate, all of his press conferences, and a virtual town hall were all under the microscope. How honest was O’Toole? Read the story to see how many claims were true, false, or exaggerated, and use our tool to filter claims by topic.

  • The one-month data verification project concluded with Liberal leader Justin Trudeau.

I checked everything Liberal leader Justin Trudeau said for a week. this is what I found

Because he’s the incumbent, Trudeau is arguably treated with more scrutiny than any other leader, and repeatedly faced tough questions about his last six years in office. So what was your “dishonesty density,” the fasle complaint rate per speaking time, compared to the other leaders? Read the story to see how many claims were true, false, or exaggerated, and use our tool to filter claims by topic.
