Waterloo Region School Boards Cancel All WCSSAA Sports Through January

The Waterloo Region District School Board and the Waterloo Catholic District School Board announced Monday that all Waterloo County High School Athletic Association (WCSSAA) sports will be suspended until January 3, 2022.

That includes games and practices scheduled starting December 14.

School boards said the decision was based on the direction of the Waterloo Region Medical Health Officer.

On Monday, Dr. Hsiu-Li Wang confirmed that there were four locally confirmed cases of the Omicron variant. Nine sports teams have suspected or confirmed Omicron cases, and there are more than 500 high-risk contacts associated with those teams or groups.

As for COVID-19 cases, 183 new infections were reported on Monday. That count includes the results for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The Waterloo Region District School Board and the Waterloo Catholic District School Board added a total of 32 new infections to their respective COVID-19 boards over the weekend.
