Vulva molder artist guilty of sexually assaulting female air cadet

An air cadet instructor took advantage of his position of power over a teenage girl to sexually assault her. David Lobjoie, also an artist molder of vulvas, claimed that the victim wanted an examination of the private parts given his expertise. A defense rejected by the court.

Buying a vibrator, massages while being increasingly naked, viewing erotic photos: David Lobjoie’s modus operandi is similar to that of “grooming”, a gradual approach to gaining the trust of a minor and expose yourself to sexuality before attacking it.

“The evidence demonstrates a slow, methodical and constant gradation of the steps leading to a normalization of sexuality,” concluded Judge Dominique Dudemaine on Friday at the Longueuil courthouse.

The judge thus found David Lobjoie guilty of sexual exploitation of a minor, sexual assault and making sexually explicit material accessible to a child.

The 53-year-old was a civilian instructor for the Air Cadets between September 2015 and February 2020, a program run by the Canadian Armed Forces. He taught civics and sports conditioning to young people aged 12 to 18.

Trust

It is in this context that David Lobjoie meets the teenager. A relationship of trust was built over time, so much so that he began giving her private training lessons. The young girl’s mother then trusts David Lobjoie.

However, at the latter’s request, the teenager must act as if she did not know him in front of the other air cadets. No question of revealing to them the numerous meetings at the instructor’s home.

After training, David Lobjoie begins to massage the 17-year-old’s back. If the young girl is clothed at the start, she becomes more and more naked at the request of her instructor as the sessions progress. So much so that in the end, she no longer wears a bra or panties.

“It was like a ritual,” the victim described at trial.

The attacker first takes care to avoid the teenager’s private parts. But on one occasion, he massages the teenager’s clitoris. During the final massage, he inserts a finger into her vagina. Gestures not consented to by the victim.

At the same time, David Lobjoie presents photos and videos of a sexual nature to the teenager. A ploy to trivialize sexuality and normalize its behavior, believes the judge. He asks the teenager not to talk about it, otherwise he might get in trouble with the court martial.

David Lobjoie also shows the victim photos of his penis and repeatedly tells her he wants full sexual relations with her. He even buys her a vibrator and promises her a nude photo shoot when she comes of age.

In addition to being an amateur photographer, the accused is a renowned vulva molding artist in this small community. He has participated in the Festivulve and other events for several years. He also molded the sexual organ of a friend of the victim.

A version “sewn with white thread”, according to the judge

Version sewn with white thread. Lack of candor and consistency. Evolutionary testimony. This is how Judge Dudemaine describes David Lobjoie’s testimony at trial. For example, the defendant claimed that a photo showing a woman with a dildo was not erotic. He called the image an “academic nude photo” intended to depict “light on the object.”

David Lobjoie admitted to touching the teenager’s private parts, but said he did it without sexual aim. According to his account, it was the victim who asked him to check her vagina due to pain. She said she refused to consult a gynecologist, according to the accused.

“She said to me: ‘You’ve been doing casts for a long time. You know exactly how a female vulva is made. Can you see if I’m made like the others?” “, testified the accused.

David Lobjoie maintains that he acted as a “parent” would have acted in the context, that is, by carrying out an “anatomical examination” of the teenager’s private parts. “I noticed visually that her vagina was completely closed. I placed my fingers on the vulva, I spread it and I noticed a complete closure,” he said.

The numerous contradictions in his testimony led the judge to completely reject his defense.

David Lobjoie had no expertise to carry out such an examination. Furthermore, an anatomical examination has nothing to do with the casting technique, despite the accused’s statements, according to the judge.

“There are fundamental differences between the two procedures. He tried to instill an aura of credibility,” analyzes the judge.

The defense lawyer, Mr.e Laurent Morin, attempted to attack the victim’s credibility by accusing her of having returned to the accused’s house after being attacked by him. This “inappropriate” attempt by the defense perpetuates myths and stereotypes against victims, the judge recalled.

As for the teenager, she gave “consistent” and “credible” testimony, according to the judge.
