The Canadian parliament has officially recognized that genocide is being perpetrated against the Uyghurs in China. Canadian MPs were unanimous. They pointed to political and anti-religious indoctrination, forced labor and the destruction of cultural sites of the Muslim minority of Xingiang Province.
Beijing has let its anger explode and calls this recognition a malicious provocation.
“There has never been a so-called genocide, forced labor or religious oppression in Xinjiang. Such inflammatory accusations are fabricated out of ignorance and prejudice. These are just malicious and politically motivated words that cannot be further from the truth “Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said.
According to various NGOs, more than a million Uyghurs are in detention in political re-education camps. Beijing denies and claims that these are vocational training centers intended to distance them from terrorism and separatism after attacks attributed to Uyghurs.
Canadian MPs are now calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his government to officially recognize that a genocide is taking place in China. But for now, if Justin Trudeau recognizes enormous human rights violations in the Xingiang, he prefers to consult with his partners in the international community on the use of the term genocide, which had however been used l administration of Donald Trump.
Relations between Canada and China have been going through an unprecedented crisis since late 2018.
Since that date, the former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig and his compatriot Michael Spavor, have been accused of espionage and arrested. And this, a few days after the arrest of a Huawei executive, Meng Wanzhou, at the Vancouver airport, at the request of the American justice which wants to judge her for bank fraud.
An amendment calling for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics to be moved if the “genocide” continues was also passed by Canadian MPs.
