UP Express Passengers Can Now Pay Fares Via Debit Cards As Part Of An Ongoing Pilot Project | The Canadian News

For customers and travelers using UP Express trains, they will now be able to pay with debit cards as part of an ongoing pilot project aimed at offering ways to travel for those who do not use Presto’s fare card system.

Metrolinx, the Ontario government organization that oversees UP Express, GO Transit and Presto, launched the new payment option Thursday on the four-stop UP line, which runs between Union Station and Toronto Pearson International Airport.

Passengers will be able to use their physical cards or those linked to mobile wallet applications and will need to touch at the beginning and end of the trip, which is similar to using Presto cards.

Officials noted that there will be a temporary authorization of $ 15 at the beginning and that the cost of the trip, depending on the distance, will be deducted from that amount.

The agency previously confirmed that debit payments would be added in the spring, but it is unclear why exactly there was a delay.

A spokesperson told Global News that the completion date for the pilot project has not been finalized.

Metrolinx staff said that if the pilot project is deemed successful, it could be expanded to other transit agencies.
