Unemployment in BC falls to 4.6% in mid-2022

While unemployment is falling in the Okanagan, the province is seeing a slight shift in the other direction.

The jobless rate rose to 4.6 percent in June from 4.5 percent in May, though still an improvement from the 6.4 percent jobless rate a year earlier.

BC also added another 6,100 jobs in June, according to Statistics Canada’s latest Friday release, while the increase was 5,100 in May. The province lost 2,000 jobs in April.

However, the low unemployment rate is contributing to a tight job market in BC, which the province’s NDP government acknowledged in a press release following the Statistics Canada report. The province is also struggling with the effects of inflation.
