UK lifts travel ban from Africa over Omicron variant

The British government announced on Tuesday that it will remove from the “red list” 11 African countries from which it had extremely limited travel due to the Omicron variant of the coronavirus, initially identified by South Africa but now very present in England.

London would have reacted to the announcement of the omicron in South Africa banning flying from 10 countries in southern Africa and Nigeria.

Thus, only British citizens or legal residents were allowed to travel from these destinations, who were required to quarantine upon arrival in hotels designated by the government but paid for out of pocket.

But as of 04:00 am on Wednesday, the 11 countries will be left out of the “red list”, announced the Minister of Transport, Grant Shapps.

As always, we review all of our travel-related measures and may impose further restrictions if necessary to protect public health, “Shapps tweeted.

The Minister of Health, Sajid Javid, also presented the measure to the deputies, at the beginning of a parliamentary debate in which the government of Boris Johnson He seeks to win the support of dozens of rebellious legislators from his own party to approve new sanitary measures against the spread of émicron.

Javid explained that the “red list” is removed because “it is now less effective in curbing the incursion of Omicron from abroad. “On Monday, the minister said that the new variant already represents 20% of new cases in the country and 40% in London.
