Two UBC students killed after driver ran off road near Thunderbird Stadium

A heartbreaking accident in the early hours of Sunday killed two pedestrians, both students at the University of British Columbia.

At approximately 1:46 a.m., a vehicle veered off Marine Drive, west of Thunderbird Stadium, and struck a man and woman, both 18 years old, who were walking on the sidewalk. Paramedics declared both victims dead at the scene.

The driver, a 21-year-old man, was detained and taken to hospital for minor injuries. Later released, the man will appear in court at a later date.

The investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing, led by the University’s RCMP and assisted by the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service.

“Police are continuing to investigate to determine whether speed and alcohol or drugs are factors in this collision, as they have not been ruled out,” Cpl said. Ian Sim.

“It is difficult to understand and express the enormity of the loss of these two bright and promising young adults,” said Ono. “I hope more details emerge in the coming days that can deepen our sadness even further.”

Witnesses are asked to come forward and contact Mounties, who are requesting dash cam video of the incident, at 604-224-1322.
