Trump asks to block documents of the assault on the Capitol

Washington. Former President Donald Trump yesterday asked the Supreme Court to block the delivery of documents to the Congressional committee investigating the January 6 assault on the Capitol by his supporters, in which five people died.

Trump asked the highest court to overturn a ruling this month by a federal appeals court, which denied his request to keep White House records secret.

That appeals court paved the way on December 9 for the delivery of hundreds of pages of documentation to the parliamentary committee investigating the assault on the Capitol.

But he gave Trump 14 days to appeal to the Supreme Court, which the former president did in extremis. Trump wants to keep the files secret, which include lists of people who visited or called him that day.

The special committee of the House of Representatives, in which the Democrats have a majority, must assess what role Trump and his collaborators played in the attack on the headquarters of Congress.

The former president, who denies any responsibility for the attack, denounces “a political maneuver” and refuses to collaborate. He resorted to justice making use of a prerogative of the Executive Power that allows maintaining the confidentiality of his communications even if he is summoned by Congress.
