Train crash with the United States?

From the United States has already come the accusation that the electric counter-reform of the 4T government is in conflict with the T-MEC, if carried out, it could be very detrimental to the only major component of the total demand of the Mexican economy , exports.

Can a powerful government, like the one led by President López Obrador undoubtedly, do what he wants? The answer is in the negative. This is because there are powerful powers that are outside their domain and their subordination. This is the case of the counter-reform for the electricity sector and which has met with opposition, which has already been openly declared by the United States government, with President Joe Biden at the helm.

I believe that defending this proposal will be very difficult at diplomatic level, due to the lack of technical support to support it. This is a proposal that has only political and ideological support. Politically, in terms of the motivation to reverse a reform promoted by the so-called “neoliberal” government of Peña Nieto. And from an ideological angle, because it is fundamentally based on the idea, rather outdated, by the way, that the State is always the absolute good of the film and must triumph, even in the monopoly variant, over the private sector in strategic sectors such as electricity.

Contrary to many people’s beliefs, I think the electric counter reform has already started to have detrimental consequences from the moment of its declaration on the propensity to invest by companies and investors. However, this is not the only impact felt in this sense and without a doubt the recessive trends in the Mexican economy have been accentuated. This is undoubtedly not good news for the level of employment and well-being of the vast majority of the country.

In a very ominous way, the accusation has already come from the United States that the electric counter-reform of the 4T government is in violation of the T-MEC free trade agreement. If exported, it could be very detrimental to the only major component of the total demand of the Mexican economy that has shown dynamics in recent times, namely exports.

Experts on the subject have also mentioned, and certainly not unfounded, that a train wreck against the Biden administration could even lead to a downgrade of Mexico’s sovereign debt rating. That is, from the direct debt of the Federal Government. Will be?
