It is a reality that due to the issue of globalization and the constant updates of technology, the needs in the environment and the labor market have had a lot of movement. Today there are many vacancies that require specific skills and competencies that we do not necessarily study in school because they did not exist as such and that leave many spaces unoccupied.
“It is a fact that universities are training people who are going to have to look for a job that probably does not yet exist,” explains Vivian Cazadero, Head of Learning Design at BEDU, a talent training company focused on reducing the technology gap. “This is becoming more and more relevant, however a marvel of education is that just as the demand for labor grows in various ways, so have the opportunities and vision of innovation brought to education has been increasing.”
Thanks to this, many institutions have emerged that are dedicated to being able to support and close the gap between people who graduate and the needs of the market with skills necessary for the digital economy, which is what we are experiencing today.
Cazadero shares with El Economista that there is a term that is being used a lot in this area, it is complementary or mixed careers, which what they do is take all the academic base that a university career gives us with the development of skills to achieve be competent within the labor market. “The reality is that the technology sector today
It has many vacancies that have not been able to be filled because we do not have people with the knowledge and skills to do so, hence these complementary careers arise ”.
For this reason, the specialist also shares examples of careers that could evolve in an important way so as not to lose their validity:
Industrial or mechatronics, mechanical, or systems engineering, these could complement their academic training with topics of web development, mobile development and be able to apply for vacancies as engineers or cloud architects, as people who manage this type of services or developers. “The bases as engineers are important but the trend is to specialty.”
Accounting, finance, economics, could be combined with issues of data analysis, machine learning and big data, either with packages such as R or Python, thereby completing to be data analysts or leaders of statistics areas.
Communicologists, design, advertising, marketing, could be complemented with user experience issues, interface design for UI themes (User Interface), service design, this helps to be able to open a market or apply for vacancies that have to do with themes technological.
Administration or business, could be complemented with business intelligence and analytics issues, this could generate business opportunities or manage projects related to digital products, also positions as project manager or agilists, which are required in organizations today.
“These are examples of traditional careers that are giving us a line to apply for different vacancies and not just for a matter of professional experience but to truly have the necessary skills and knowledge to be prepared.”
Cazadero adds that although this seems to be for people who are looking for a change within their work or with a professional opportunity at the door, these opportunities are also beginning to exist within the same universities, for example there is currently an alliance between Bedu and Tec Milenio, where much of what is sought is to develop these profiles not necessarily once the students have already graduated but through different models such as certifications for the last semesters, so they can also start training according to their interests or work experiences, without this having to be a subsequent process.
Today it is also sought to have master’s degrees oriented to the specialization of these topics with two advantages, that of the skills to find opportunities and obtain an academic degree that also gives greater curricular support when people are applying.
The representative of this EdTech concludes: “We know that although educational institutions give us very good bases of knowledge and skills, it is a reality that professional experiences and competencies have to be developed, but everything happens in a transversal way nowadays and there are to be prepared for it ”.
