Timeline: How NHL Outbreaks Connect to a Game in Calgary

VANCOUVER The epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak that has now hit the Maple Leafs, with John Tavares and Alex Kerfoot in self-isolation, appears to have been a Dec. 9 game between the Flames and the Carolina Hurricanes in Calgary. There are other outbreaks in the league, to be sure, but the Flames have confirmed that the Omicron variant was identified within their group, by far the largest with 19 players, as well as coaches and support staff who tested positive. This is how it has developed.

December 9: The flames harbor hurricanes.

December 11: The flames harbor Bruins. Hurricanes visit the greasers.

December 12th: The Canucks are home to hurricanes. Carolina star Sebastian Aho revealed an undisclosed illness.

December 13th: The flames place Elias Lindholm, Andrew Mangiapane, Brad Richardson, Adam Ruzicka, Chris Tanev, Nikita Zadorov and a member of the NHL protocol training staff.

  • Hurricanes Aho, Seth Jarvis, and a member of the training staff enter the protocols. They remain in quarantine in Vancouver.
  • The NHL postpones the Flames games in Chicago (December 13), Nashville (December 14) and against the Leafs (December 16).

December 14th: Flames Noah Hanifin, Milan Lucic and Sean Monahan on protocols.

  • Hurricanes-Wild game postponed. Jordan Staal, Andrei Svechnikov, Ian Cole and Steven Lorentz from Carolina in protocols. Still quarantined in Minnesota.
  • The Oilers host the Leafs after Edmonton forward Ryan McLeod and head coach Dave Tippett enter protocols.
Carolina's Seth Jarvis and Calgary's Andrew Mangiapane entered NHL protocols in the days after hurricanes hit the flames on Dec. 9.
  • Canucks put Brad Hunt, Luke Schenn and Juho Lammikko on protocols, then took Tucker Poolman out of the game against Columbus.
  • Bruins Craig Smith and Brad Marchand on protocols.

December 15: Hurricanes, with 16 skaters, plays in Detroit.

  • The flames place Rasmus Andersson, Byron Froese, Johnny Gaudreau, Erik Gudbranson, Trevor Lewis, Jacob Markstrom, Tyler Pitlick, trainers Darryl Sutter, Ryan Huska and Kirk Muller plus seven support staff members in the protocols.
  • Patrice Bergeron, captain of the Bruins, in protocols.
  • The Flames games were postponed until December 18.

December 16: Flames Dillon Dubé, Oliver Kylington, and support staff were added to the protocols.

  • Bruins Oskar Steen, Jeremy Swayman, Trent Frederic and Anton Blidh in protocols.

December 17: Flames adds Mikael Backlund and helps staff with protocols.

  • NHL postpones Saturday’s Canadiens-Bruins game.

  • Leafs put John Tavares and Alex Kerfoot on protocols.
