Thursday’s letters: Ukraine is protecting Europe from Russia

Article content

To those who have argued against maintaining NATO, observe what Russia is doing to its peace-loving sovereign neighbor Ukraine. Not in the scariest nightmare, could anyone have imagined that in the 21st century any country would seek to destroy and conquer another state. What Russia is doing in Ukraine is a replay of the most horrific events of WW2. This is not a video game where we cheer for the underdog.

The tragic irony is that non-NATO member Ukraine is protecting Europe against precisely the kind of threat that led to the creation of NATO in the first place. If NATO wants to remain relevant and viable for the future, the time is now for the West to follow the lead of the supremely courageous Ukrainians and provide them with robust military aid to defend their young democracy.

Canada must strengthen its military

Europe is not impressed by Trudeau’s “Deadbeat Dad Tour.” Under Trudeau’s misguided leadership, Canada has underfunded their NATO financial commitment. It is exactly during the current Ukraine crisis, that Canada has dropped the ball by underfunding our NATO commitment. There are no prizes for coming in second in a war.

Considering Canada’s proximity to Russia, Trudeau should be beefing up our entire military across the board in Canada and abroad. If Russia moves beyond the Ukraine and crosses the NATO line, the world will be in World War Three. Is Canada prepared for this? Under Justin Trudeau, we are not.

More inclusive reporting style needed

Re. “Public board shut out again,” March 5

The Journal has become part of the problem. This headline divides people into us and them. We do not need everything to be reported in this way. It just adds to the extreme stress we are already feeling; COVID, Ukraine, freedom protests, residential school serious and politics. Please use a more inclusive reporting style. The media is responsible for some of this.

PM’s photo-op wants Ukraine victims

There is a picture of the prime minister and minister of defense among Canadian troops in Latvia. This is clearly a photo-op and demeans the situation in Ukraine. Even more disturbing is that they are all smiling while nearby, people are being killed.

Just like waving getting on and off airplanes and shaking hands with the Queen who has no influence on today’s crisis.
How low have we descended politically in Canada.
