Three to See: David Cantine opening, Winter Blues Fest and EIFF Ukraine fundraiser

Still Life Pictures: One of Edmonton’s great artists is minimalist abstract painter David Cantine, who will be at his opening reception at Peter Robertson Gallery from 2 pm to 4 pm Saturday. What originally began as a still life of apples 45 years back became a lifelong serial project, providing precisely how limitations and chosen restrictions can actually create an entire world of sorts. Cantine’s four-circle paintings are instantly recognizable, yet always have something new going on within. I love them; do pay a visit!

Help Ukraine: The Edmonton International Film Festival is presenting two fundraiser screenings of Vegreville-area-filmed They Who Surround Us, written, directed and starring Troy Ruptash (Mad Men). Jimmy Shewchuck’s Prairie Catering will provide the food. “Growing up in the warm, welcoming community of Vegreville was a gift for all three of us,” says EIFF’s Kerrie Long. “It shaped who we are and we felt compelled to put our heads together and collaborate on a project to support Ukraine.” Proceeds go to the Cobblestone Freeway Support Ukraine FoundationRuptash’s choice — and he’ll stick around after the two screenings’ Q&As.
