Three best NHL bets for today: Underdog Flyers look to oust Capitals

With 14 games scheduled, Tuesday will be one of the busiest nights of the entire season for NHL bettors. A card like this is sure to provide some betting value and below are the three games that stood out:

Philadelphia Flyers (+220) vs. Washington Capitals (-275), 7 p.m. ET

It was mission accomplished for the Capitals last week. Washington went 3-0 against Tampa Bay, Boston and Pittsburgh to eliminate any chance the Islanders could make a miraculous charge for the final playoff spot in the East.

And while Washington’s 10-4-1 record suggests he’s in excellent form over his last 15 games, the Caps only have a +3 goal differential over that span and have allowed three or more goals in 13 of those 15. matches.

At some point, that kind of game will catch up with Washington, so there’s a lot of value in backing the Flyers to trap the Caps in a sleepy spot on Tuesday night.

Carolina Hurricanes (-125) vs. New York Rangers (+105), 7 p.m. ET:

Don’t look now, but the New York Rangers are making a serious run for the Metropolitan Division crown. Tuesday night the Blueshirts

Carolina is just 6-6-3 in its last 15 games, but those results don’t paint an accurate description of how well the Canes have been playing over the last month. Carolina has skated with an expected goal rate of 58.6% and a high-danger goal chance rate of 59.4% in that span, indicating the Canes continue to control the game at 5-on-5. The Rangers They’ve been steadily improving throughout the season, but their 5-on-5 game isn’t on the same level as Carolina’s.

Igor Shesterkin is the A-side in any goalkeeping duel this season, but Carolina’s Freddie Andersen has been one of the few goalkeepers to play anywhere near Igor’s level this season.

With New York’s goalie advantage somewhat mitigated and Carolina’s 5-on-5 numbers still bright, now is a good time to buy something low on a Stanley Cup contender.

The best bet in the NHL: Carolina Hurricanes -130 or better (DraftKings)

Edmonton Oilers (+120) vs. Minnesota Wild (-145), 8 p.m. ET

The Edmonton Oilers have been rolling ever since the team made a coaching change, dumping Dave Tippett in favor of Jay Woodcroft. Edmonton is 19-7-3 and their .707 scoring percentage is the fifth-best mark in the NHL in that span.

Things are also working under the surface for the Oilers. Edmonton have posted an expected goal rate of 53.3% and a high-danger chance rate of 57.9% since Woodcroft took over.

The Oilers are not a team that needs to control the 5-on-5 game to be successful. With Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl on board, the Oilers have the talent to work through their struggles on any given night. What their recent 5v5 play tells us is that they are less reliant on McDavid and Draisaitl to rescue them, which can only lead to good things.

The Wild have been excellent since the trade deadline, but there really isn’t much separating these two teams and Edmonton’s dynamic offense is a severe test for Minnesota’s outstanding defense.

The best bet in the NHL: Edmonton Oilers +120 (BetMGM)
