This is the cheapest supermarket in Spain in 2021, according to the OCU: the complete list

The Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) presented its annual study of supermarkets this Wednesday. The organization has visited 1,103 establishments in 65 Spanish cities. The report concludes that the cheapest supermarket visited is Alcampo de Murcia. At the other extreme, the most expensive establishment is the Sánchez Romero from La Moraleja (Madrid).

For second consecutive Year, the cheapest city to make the purchase is Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz), followed by Almería, Castellón, Puertollano, Ciudad Real and Zamora. The most expensive, on the other hand, are Palma de Mallorca, Getxo, Barcelona and Alcobendas-San Sebastián de lo Reyes. Valencia and Murcia are the autonomous communities where shopping is cheaper.

In the capital, the cheapest studied supermarket is the Mercadona in the street of the Monastery of Las Huelgas, in Montecarmelo. It is followed by the Alcampo of Avenida de Pío XII, the Alcampo of Avenida de Monforte de Lemos and the Supeco of the Eduardo Barreiros crossing.

In Barcelona, the cheapest establishments are, in this order, the Alcampo of Diagonal avenue, the Consum in Carrer Berruguete, the Supeco in Sant Pere d’Abanto and the Mercadona in Carrer Valencia.

The study has focused on a basic shopping basket of 238 products that are usually found in all Spanish homes. The OCU has compared more than 160,000 prices. The average annual saving depending on the choice of establishment can reach 1,073 euros. The average annual expenditure of Spanish families is 5,491 euros.

Alcampo is the cheapest chain in 23 cities; Mercadona, at 17 and Supeco, at eight. The study also points out that the rise in the price of fuel and, above all, electricity has had a significant impact on the rise in prices of basic products, especially meat and packaged goods.

The maximum annual savings, that is, the difference between buying at the most expensive supermarket and the cheapest one is 3,532 euros a year in Madrid. Alcobendas follows with 3,402 euros of annual savings. This is due to the “Sánchez Romero effect”, in the words of the person in charge of the study. This chain of luxury supermarkets is only present in the Community of Madrid. The third city in the classification of maximum annual savings is Barcelona, with 2,093 euros of difference between the most expensive and cheapest establishment.

The study highlights that the increase in prices has been of a 0,4% throughout the national territory with respect to the previous year.
