President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced that his administration already has a “plan b” regarding the management that the federal government seeks to have over lithium so that it remains in the hands of the federal government, in case the legislators vote against it. your power reform initiative.

“If the legislators decide to act against this initiative, which is, I will not say that it is unpatriotic, but it is contrary to the national interest, we already have a plan b for this lithium case,” he emphasized in a morning press conference.

López Obrador pointed out that lithium will not be privatized, which is why he told the businessmen not to have any illusions and that they would wait for concessions for its exploitation, since this mineral has to remain as part of the Nation for its development.

The Mexican president also reported on the possibility of creating a state company for the management, research and exploration of this strategic mineral for the development of the future of the country and thus quantify its potential.

“There is no doubt that it is a strategic mineral for the future development of the world and we want to keep this mineral in the hands of Mexicans, of the Nation. And develop it, that is why lithium is going into the electricity reform initiative, “he said.

It will be as of January 17, 2022 when the legislators who are members of the Chamber of Deputies will begin with open parliaments on the electricity reform.

There is still no date on the possible discussion and vote on the initiative sent by the president that, among other things, seeks to establish lithium as a strategic mineral, so it cannot be concessioned, and only the State would work on its exploration and production.

While the concessions that have already been granted for their exploitation will remain in force, as long as the companies accredit before the CFE and the Secretariat of Energy (Sener), that they have started the exploration process and that they are in the terms provided to start production. .
