They would assess in the InDRE possible first case in Mexico of the Omicron variant

Last night various versions were recorded on the analysis of a possible first case of the Omicron variant in our country. The probable carrier would be a traveler who has been to South Africa and is under review by the Institute for Epidemiological Diagnosis and Reference (InDRE).

The Economist consulted the press department of the federal Health Secretariat (SSA) which indicated that the contagion from the variant found in Africa is not yet confirmed.

He explained that as part of the epidemiological surveillance, the InDRE works to identify variants based on different tests, with which the results could take up to 72 hours.

At the end of November, authorities and scientists from the African country revealed the existence of this new variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which has multiple mutations and spread rapidly through South Africa.

Faced with such a situation, various countries in the world began to intensify their sanitary measures such as Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Israel, which restricted the entry of travelers from that Nation.

A few days ago, the Pan American Health Organization warned that the new variant of Covid-19 would soon circulate in other countries of the American continent.

“For now, Delta remains the predominant variant in the Americas. Canada and Brazil are the only countries in the region where Omicron has been detected, but surely other countries will start to see this new variant in circulation soon, ”explained Carissa Etienne.

The director of the organization called on the countries of the region to duplicate surveillance efforts and report any case of this new mutation to the World Health Organization.

Specialists consulted by El Economista previously have stated that the Mexican government should focus on increasing the speed of the application of vaccines in our country and consider that it is a good time to apply a booster dose. As of December 2, 77 million 366,309 people 18 years of age and older had been vaccinated.
