They urge sustainable exploitation of hydrocarbons

The economic recovery after the Covid-19 health crisis will cause an increase in global oil demand and production, in addition to all activities in the industry, as has been observed in the Mexican Petroleum Congress in person in Monterrey, Nuevo León, where Experts agree that they face a new reality: the urgency of the transition towards clean energy sources, so that beyond reducing the consumption of fossil fuels, it is possible to begin to discuss the capture of carbon and sustainable production of hydrocarbons.

The one who in the past administration was director of Petróleos Mexicanos Exploración y Producción (PEP), Gustavo Hernández García, assured El Economista that a slow but steady recovery of the industry is observed after the mobility and human resources pandemic due to the health contingency of Covid-19, as observed in the participation of attendees at the CMP in Monterrey, Nuevo León.

“It seemed very complicated for the forum to take place, but we saw that it was filled up to the end, that it is hopeful, that we can come together and move forward as an industry,” he said.

Fernando Rodríguez de la Garza, specialist in reservoir energy and enhanced hydrocarbon recovery, after multiple positions at the Instituto Mexicano del Petróleo and Pemex as well as being a member of the Academy of Engineering of Mexico, the SPE and the College of Petroleum Engineers of Mexico, explained that based on various projections in 2050, 54% of the energy will still come from fossils, 29% from gas, 16% and mineral coal 9%, while in 2018 this participation was 81% Therefore, in addition to the transition in electricity, the countries must implement measures to capture CO2 through improved recovery in oil fields, as a strategy to combat climate change.

“Throughout this period, continuous investment in the oil industry will be required to maintain production at the levels required by global demand,” he explained, “the capture of carbon and hydrogen will be the catalysts for deep decarbonization after 2035,” he said. the expert in the framework of conferences of the Mexican Petroleum Congress 2021.
