A migrant who was injured in a road accident In southern Mexico he died this Tuesday, Mexican authorities reported, rising to 56 deaths in the tragedy that occurred last week.

The Secretary of State for Health Chiapas (South, bordering Guatemala) reported in a statement that the victim had “severe head and chest trauma,” for which “he was intubated” in a public hospital, where he died.

Authorities are investigating the identity and nationality of the migrant, one of the 160 who were traveling hidden in the trailer that crashed into a pedestrian bridge on a highway in Chiapas on December 9.

With this, there are 56 fatalities in the tragedy that occurred at the main access point for undocumented immigrants, who are transported in inhumane conditions in trailers to the north of the country by human traffickers.

Federal and state authorities have managed to identify 19 of the 56 deaths in this accident, the most serious that has involved migrants in Mexico.

According to the Ministry of Health, 62 migrants more remain hospitalized.

After the accident in Chiapas, the government recalled that since October it has deployed three operations in which it found about 1,400 migrants who were mobilized in trailers, including about 200 minors.

The December 9 tragedy came after a controversial US program that forces migrants to wait in Mexico for a response to their asylum applications was reactivated.

More than 190,000 undocumented persons have been detected in Mexico between January and September, triple the number in 2020. Some 74,300 have been deported.
