They prohibit smoking in the Historic Center of CDMX


In order to create smoke-free spaces and make the country’s capital more attractive in terms of tourism, Mexico City announced that as of May 31, smoking is prohibited in the Historical Center.

At a press conference, the head of government, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, indicated that the decision was made within the framework of World No Tobacco Day and there are 11 public spaces in the Historic Center where smoking is not allowed.

“As you saw, there is a publication that we made in the Official Gazette (…) these provisions were published today in the official Gazettewhere smoking is prohibited in certain places in the Historic Center,” he explained.

Regarding which are the spaces in which it will no longer be possible to smoke, the Secretary of Government, Martí Batres Guadarrama, revealed that they are the Zócalo of Mexico City, the Plaza de la Mexicanidad, Plaza Manuel Gamio, Plaza del Seminario, the empedradillo, the Plaza of the Historic Center of Monte de Piedad street.

Also Francisco I. Madero street, better known as, “Madero Pedestrian Corridor”, the Portals of the Government Building (located between 20 de Noviembre Street and José María Pino Suárez Street), the portals of the Old City Hall (located between Calle 20 de Noviembre and calle 5 de Febrero), los Portales (located between calle 16 de Septiembre and calle Francisco I. Madero, where the offices of the Mexico City Congress are located), as well as calle 20 de Noviembre, between the Zócalo and the street of Venustiano Carranza.

“It is a health measure, to protect the environment and it is also a measure that seeks to protect circulation in these large public spaces that are in the heart of the country, of all families, because girls, boys, older adults, women, people of all ages to activities of many different types: civic, cultural, recreational, commercial, etc., “he added.

Sheinbaum Pardo He stressed that before carrying out sanctions, an information campaign will be carried out, by which signs will be placed and compliance with the smoke-free notice will be supervised.

“We never fine anyone for not wearing a face mask, in the same way, in this case, even when there are sanctions, we know that people are going to cooperate so that this area is smoke-free,” he pointed out.

According to the Official Gazette, the Historic Center Authority, the Sub-Secretariat for Mayoral Programs and reorganization of public roads and the Health Secretary.

“They will carry out actions aimed at freeing spaces free of tobacco smoke and other emissions that interfere with the right of non-smokers,” the document deepened.

From this, the corresponding complaints and reports will be presented for the administrative fault or the crimes that could be incurred, in case of opposition to the release of the consigned spaces.
