They arrest an element of the GN who shot at students

The Guanajuato Attorney General’s Office reported that an element of the National Guard (GN) was arrested who presumably shot at students from the University of Guanajuato (UG), resulting in one death.

Last Wednesday in Irapuato, Guanajuato, elements of the GN chased —for reasons still unknown— a truck where UG students were traveling.

The young Angel, 19 years old, died from gunshots. Another student, named Alejandra, was injured and is reported in serious condition at a hospital.

A first version suggests that the students went out to a meeting when they met several GN patrols, who began to chase them because they did not stop the van.

The rector of the University of Guanajuato, Luis Felipe Guerrero Agripino, said: “We repudiate the violence that once again puts our university community in mourning and we join the legitimate social demand to live in an environment of peace, at the same time that we demand the prompt clarification of the facts and the consequent administration of justice”.

He indicated that classes at the Copal Campus will be suspended until the university community decides and the ideal security conditions are in place.

And he added that he will request that the complaint about the aggression against the students be raised to the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH).

The UG student community held a silent demonstration yesterday, April 28, to demand justice for the murder of Ángel Yael and Alejandra, the injured student.

Via Twitter, the Prodh Center requested that the facts be “investigated by civil authorities.”

“Cases like this show why we must oppose the proposal to once again reform the Constitution to completely hand over the National Guard to the Secretary of National Defense.”

Complaints before the CNDH, on the rise

According to information from the National Human Rights Violations Alert System, the GN has a total of 106 complaints for allegedly violating fundamental rights between last January and March.

The GN closed 2020, the year in which it was added to the count after its creation in 2019, with a total of 350 complaints; by 2021 the figure increased 44% to stand at 504 cases.

In violations of greater impact, for this year, the GN appears in the first position in terms of arbitrary detention, with 17 complaints.

In cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment, the institution has 14 complaints, while in the torture section it is pointed out in six cases. (With information from Rolando Ramos)
