NEW JERSEY — A Middlesex County academy in Edison is the best school in New Jersey, according to a new national ranking from US News and World Report. This year’s Best High Schools list evaluated more than 17,800 schools across the country, including 355 in New Jersey.
The 2022 Best High Schools ranking aims to show how well the nation’s public schools serve all students, regardless of performance level, by teaching them basic skills and preparing them for college-level work, according to a release from US News press.
Families can also use the rankings to see how schools compare nationally, statewide, and locally on factors like graduation rates and college readiness.
While thousands of schools were tested, these New Jersey schools ranked in the top 100, according to US News:
- Middlesex County Academy of Sciences, Mathematics and Engineering Technologies, Edison. Ranked 23.
- Union County Magnet High School, Scotch Plains: Rank 49.
- Bergen County Academies, Hackensack: Post 61.
- High Tech High School, Lincroft: Ranked 65.
- Dr. Ronald E McNair High School, Jersey City: Rank 68.
- Middlesex County Academy for Allied Health, Woodbridge: Post 69.
- Biotech High School, Freehold: Rank 80.
- Bergen County Technical High School – Teterboro, Teterboro: Ranked 93.
This year, the top 15 schools nationally are in 14 different states.
Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria, Virginia, was ranked #1 in the nation, as well as among magnet schools.

This year’s schools were ranked on six measures: college readiness, breadth of college curriculum, state assessment performance, state assessment proficiency, reading and math proficiency, reading and math performance, underserved student performance, and enrollment rates. graduation.
The data used in this year’s ranking is from the 2019-20 academic school year. US News adjusted its calculation of these measures to account for the impact COVID-19 had on schools in the 2019-20 school year.
Since most states have closed schools for in-person instruction beginning in March 2020, typically just before most states take assessments, the US Department of Education has granted waivers that allow all states waive state testing for the 2019-20 school year.
To account for this, US News relied on data from previous assessments of the
previous three years of classification. The researchers also incorporated state science assessment data from the 2018-19 school year.

In addition to national rankings, US News also published rankings at the state, metro area, and school district levels. Only metropolitan areas and school districts with three or more high schools were included in these subclassifications.
Signature School in Indiana is at the top of the list for charter schools, and Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Virginia is the No. 1 magnet school. Nevada’s Davidson Academy is the best STEM school.
