The US demands Mexico and Canada cooperation to restrict imports from China

A new law passed by the US Congress requires Mexico and Canada to cooperate with the United States to restrict Chinese imports of products made with forced labor.

The bipartisan and bicameral Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act was passed Tuesday night and imposes the burden of proof on US companies to prove that imported goods were not extracted, produced or manufactured in whole or in part with forced labor. .

Likewise, the Law will instruct the Customs and Border Protection Office of the United States to suspect that all products of China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region are made with forced labor.

Legislators also require cooperation with Mexico and Canada to prevent the importation of goods manufactured with forced labor, as required by the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC).

“It is the policy of the United States to coordinate with Mexico and Canada to effectively implement Article 23.6 of the T-MEC to prohibit the importation of goods produced totally or partially with forced or compulsory labor, including goods extracted, produced or manufactured totally or partially in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region ”, establishes the Law.

No later than 30 days after the date of promulgation of this Law, the Working Group on the Application of Forced Labor, established under section 741 of the Implementation Act of the T-MEC, will publish in the Federal Register a notice requesting comments from the public on the best way to guarantee the objective set.

This objective is that goods extracted, produced or manufactured in whole or in part with forced labor in the People’s Republic of China, including Uighurs, Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, Tibetans and members of other persecuted groups in the People’s Republic of China, and especially in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, are not imported into the United States.

The White House confirmed Wednesday that President Joe Biden will sign the new law.

In relation to this, the US government, the Lithuanian parliament, the Czech senate, the British House of Commons, the Dutch parliament and the Canadian parliament have described the Chinese Communist Party’s crackdown on the Uighurs as genocide.
