The United States exceeds 800,000 deaths from Covid-19

The United States, the country hardest hit by coronavirus pandemic, surpassed 800,000 deaths from Covid-19 this Tuesday, according to a count from Johns Hopkins University.

The figure is even greater than the entire population of several states in the country, including North Dakota and Alaska.

Democrats Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, heads of the House and Senate respectively, as well as Republican Leader in the House Kevin McCarthy and other members of Congress held a moment of silence on the steps of the Capitol, in Washington, Tuesday night.

About 450,000 of the deaths occurred in 2021, despite highly effective vaccines that were first licensed in December 2020, available in the spring.

The vast majority of deaths occurred among the unvaccinated.

Vaccination was traced during the fourth hello from covid-19, powered by the Delta variant, and more than 60% of this country of 332 million people is now fully vaccinated, although the United States still lags behind other wealthy nations.

The country is currently surfing its fifth wave, with its epicenter in the colder northern states, as people gather more often at home.

Omicron, the most recent variant of the virus that has caused global alarm since it was first reported in South Africa in late November, now accounts for about 3% of cases in the United States, although it is expected to increase rapidly, as has happened in other countries.

Health authorities urge those over 16 to be immunized with a booster dose to regain immunity to levels comparable to the two doses against existing variants.
