The Consul General of Mexico in San Antonio, Texas, Ruben Minuttireported that the number of dead Mexicans among the migrants who were found in a trailer rose to 27.

The official reported that they are already 51 migrants those who died after being crowded into the bed of a truck that was located Monday on a highway in the southern Texas city, where temperatures reached 39.4 degrees Celsius, in what they have described as one of the traffic tragedies of deadliest people in recent history.

“The number of deceased, at the moment, is 51, of which there is information where the Office of the Forensic Doctor reports that 27 of the deceased persons would presumably be of Mexican nationality, because some identity document was linked,” Minutti said. The consul explained that the nationality of the victims will be confirmed through their fingerprints.

The deceased migrants, 39 men and 12 women, were discovered Monday inside the abandoned truck in a remote area on the southern outskirts of the city, San Antonio television station KSAT reported.

The National Institute of Migration announced earlier that, in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it will be in charge of covering funeral expenses and for the repatriation of the bodies of the Mexicans found in the trailer.
