The migration crisis is a problem in all the northern states of the country: researcher at the Autonomous University of Tamaulipas

Monterey, NL. The migration crisis it is a problem of all the northern states of the country. To the hundreds of migrants who are waiting for a work or humanitarian visa from the U.S, in Reynosa, Matamoros, Juarez City Y Tijuana, we must add to the contingents of 500 to 1,000 migrants who enter Chiapas through the Suchiate River, and the closest border with the American Union is in New Lion Y Tamaulipas.

So he commented to The Economist, Jorge Lera Mejia, research professor at the Autonomous University of Tamaulipas (UAT).

“The Migration’s national institute (INM) has completely abandoned the migratory issue, the problem is not so much the migrants who arrive in the country through the “Stay in Mexico” program, but rather the thousands of migrants who cross the Suchiate River daily, in Chiapas, not in caravans, but through human trafficking by organized crime gangs”, highlighted Lera Mejía.

He explained that between 500 and 1,000 migrants from Central America, Haiti and Cuba cross daily, and only one truck with more than 50 people is detected, due to the lack of control of the INM and the National Guard.

Therefore, he said that it is important that the governors of the northern border, as well as the border mayors and the mayor of Monterrey make a common front to claim the lack of support from the federal government, as well as ask the United States to stop sending migrants from other countries to our borders, without the possibility of obtaining a visa , which becomes a time bomb”, he warned.

In recent days, the mayor of Monterrey, Luis Donaldo Colosio Riojas, gave a message in which he commented that given the constant and growing flow of migrants, his government will focus on humanitarian support and the safety of these people while they exercise their right to seek asylum in the United States or to continue on their way.

“We want to make public the reality of the migratory flow that Monterrey is already receiving and that will increase considerably in the coming months, it is necessary to be responsible. We condemn the lack of a comprehensive care strategy — in the face of the humanitarian crisis — by the federal government.”

He considered that this accelerated flow is due to the INM’s unilateral decision to transfer several buses of migrants from Mexico City to receive their visitor’s card for humanitarian reasons at the offices of Monterrey, Sonora Y Chihuahua.

It seems, he said, that the federation’s strategy “is to leave everything in the hands of the municipalities, but without contributing a single peso of resources, no plans and irresponsibly leaving people unaccompanied once their process is finished, without food. , without security, without certainty”, he reproached.

Jorge Lera Mejía indicated that if a complete look at this migratory phenomenon is given, it will be observed, for example, that in the Plaza de la República, in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, in front of the Puente Grande with McAllen, Texas, there are around 4,000 migrants in tents , waiting for his humanitarian or political visa, for a year.

“The bulk of the contingent is neither in Monterrey nor in Ciudad Victoria, which are intermediate cities, it is in the border cities. However (the massive arrival of migrants), it means that the Monterrey Plan has become an alternative in recent days for the federal government,” stressed the UAT researcher.
