The General direction of traffic (DGT) wants to end the distractions behind the wheel that have been happening on Spanish roads in recent months. He first established a control campaign with 216 cameras to get drivers to do mobile phone use while driving, being one of the biggest reasons for accidents in our country. Now, Traffic has decided to intensify its surveillance by introducing camouflaged vans located on all highways, which can be punished with a fine of 200 euros to use the mobile and the retraction of 3 points of the card.

These camouflaged vans are intended to help officers combat the use of a mobile phone behind the wheel, a discreet means of surveillance that does not have the decoration or colors of the body of the Civil Guard.

Distractions were the main reasons for fatal accidents in 2020, with more than 55,000 penalties for the use of the mobile. To others, when the new arrives Traffic Law which is in parliamentary proceedings, it is intended to increase the sanction to 6 points even if you only carry the phone in your hand and you are not using it.

What are they like and what are they for?

The main objective of these vans and of the agents who will go inside is not to remain hidden from the drivers, but to have a better visibility and position in case of committing a violation.

They are usually white, but there are also black and navy blue. The models used and announced by the DGT itself are Renault Master, Fiat Scudo and Ford Transit. And in case it is difficult for someone to recognize them, they also have identification incorporated into the license plates PGC (Civil Guard Patrol).

Pepe Navarro explained at the time the reason for these new vans:“It is true that the Civil Guard has bought some vehicles, camouflaged vans, because from above it is better controlled if people are using the mobile phone.”
