The death toll from the attack in Zinapécuaro rises to 20; It was a confrontation between groups, says AMLO

Gunmen killed 20 people in an attack on a clandestine cockfighting venue in western Mexico, authorities say, in a new slaughter in the Latin American country, plagued by the violence unleashed by Criminal organizations.

The shooting, on Sunday night, took place in Las Tinajas, in the state of Michoacanwhere the mighty Jalisco New Generation Cartel has been fighting smaller local gangs for control of drug routes.

“It was a massacre of one group against another in a clandestine palenque where they were and arrived and there they shot the attendees and unfortunately there were many deaths,” the president detailed on Monday. Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador when asked about the case in his daily press conference.

Three of the victims were women, the Michoacán prosecutor’s office said in a statement in which it originally reported the deaths of 19 people. In a later bulletin, he clarified that one of the five injured died on the way to the hospital, bringing the number of deaths to 20.

The prosecution is still investigating the circumstances in which the events occurred to identify those responsible, a task to which the national government has joined. “A team has already left for the investigation and to deal with the issue,” added López Obrador.

Despite the new massacre, the president once again defended his policy of “hugs, not bullets” to confront insecurity in the country, attacking the roots of the phenomenon, poverty and corruption.

“For the conservative there is nothing more than the use of force, they are fascists, that’s why they laugh,” he said about the criticism that his strategy has received, which for now has not stopped the average number of intentional homicides, of about 3,000 per month.
