The City will invest $8.8 million to redevelop the surroundings of the future Sannaq center

Starting next fall, the City of Montreal will kick off a series of redevelopments around the future Sanaaq center, near the Atwater metro station, whose inauguration is scheduled for 2023.

The layout concept was developed by the architectural firm Lemay following consultations. The work sites will concern Place Henri-Dunant, Hector-Toe-Blake Park, Tupper and du Sussex streets as well as Hope Avenue. All of this will require an investment of $8.8 million.

“Reflected with the partners of the district, [ce projet de réaménagement et de verdissement] will make it possible to respond concretely to the deficit of green spaces and parks in the west of the city center,” declared the mayoress of Montreal, Valérie Plante.

The project provides for the addition of 1,400 m2 of new green spaces and the planting of around forty trees. Pedestrian crossings and sidewalk projections will also aim to calm traffic.

The place will also allow the holding of cultural and leisure activities, with the establishment of a “large multifunctional grassy esplanade”.

The City will present its final development concept on May 18.

Announced in 2020, the Sanaaq center will be a cultural and community center for the city center. It will include a house of culture, a library and socio-community spaces. Its location will be on the site of the former Montreal Children’s Hospital, near Cabot Square.
