The Catalan economy slows down in the first quarter with a rise of 0.1%


The Catalan economy It slows down with a rise of 0.1% in the first quarter of this year compared to the last quarter of last year, in which it rebounded 2%, according to the advance of the Institut d’Estadística de Catalunya (Idescat). In year-on-year terms, the increase is 6.4%, compared to 6.3% in the October-December period thanks to the pull of services, the same rate as at the state level. The Government updated its forecasts for this year a few days ago and foresaw a rise of 4.9% this year, above the 4.3% estimated by the central Government for the country as a whole.

By sectors, the services have been the ones that have contributed the most to the evolution of the first quarter, with a year-on-year growth of 8.9%. The branches that have contributed the most to achieving this growth are those related to sightseeing, the result of the normalization of tourist mobility. There is also notable dynamism in wholesale trade, storage, legal activities and advertising.

The industry registers an increase of 0.4%. The branches that have performed better have been electricity and gas, chemistry and food. On the contrary, the manufacture of motor vehicles maintains significant production reductions. Construction shows a variation rate of 1.7%, while agriculture registers a decrease of 4.0%.

The preview of the GDP results for the first quarter of 2022 is provisional and will be updated in the next publication of the quarterly accounting, scheduled for June 10.
