The Cambray meeting with the teachers’ unions ends without an agreement

  • The demonstrators, ready to maintain the mobilizations

The Minister of Education, Josep González-Cambraymet this Friday with the education unions Ustec·Stes, CCOO, Intersindical-CSC, Aspepc·Sps and UGT, which have been locked up in the Department since Thursday, where some fifty teacher representatives have spent the night. But the meeting has ended without agreement. “The ‘conseller’ has not accepted any of our proposals and has not retracted the accusations against the unions,” explained Ustec spokeswoman Iolanda Mármol. Outside the ‘conselleria’, on Via Augusta in Barcelona, union representatives continue to gather. All of them will now decide whether to maintain the demonstrations. What has been ruled out is to maintain the confinement.

The unions started occupation of the ‘conselleria’ this Thursday in protest at the “imposition” of the new school calendar for the 2022-23 academic year, announced by Cambray and Pere Aragonès without prior consultation with the educational community, a fact that has bothered the School Council of Catalonia, which has forced Cambray to convene an extraordinary plenary session for this Monday.

It has been the straw that has broken the camel’s back of the patience of teachers and professors, very touched by the pandemic and who have ahead of them the application of the new primary, ESO and Baccalaureate curricula, a plan to promote Catalan in the classrooms , a digitization plan, the application of the ruling of the TSJC of 25% of classes in Spanish and the requirement of having the C2 level of Catalan to be able to teach. All this has led them to exploit against the educational policies of the Government.

The organizers demand that Cambray withdraw the order from the calendar and open a “real negotiation” of it. On Thursday, the General Director of Education, Patrícia Gomàwhich has also participated in the meeting this Friday, invited the unions to bring the bags to stay in the building because the calendar was not going to be removed. Some teachers have taken him at his word and have brought their bags.

The unions denounce that the new calendar “represents serious logistical and organizational problems” and implies an extra effort for the centers that, as of September 1, they say, do not have the entire workforce or the preparation of the course guaranteed.

On the contrary, the ‘minister’ insists that the calendar change is a “kindness” and that it does not affect “any labor right”. He has remarked that “all the adjustments” have been made to prepare the course, with one more hour of coordination during the month of September and with the advance of the appointments at the end of June, instead of a month later. Adjustments that teachers consider insufficient to have the necessary time to prepare the course. They also point out that despite the advancement of appointments, the templates are never closed until September 1.

Cambray’s words accusing the unions of immobilists and affirming that if it were up to them, the schools would continue to be closed due to the pandemic.
