The Bécancour industrial park fills up thanks to batteries

Recent corporate investment announcements in the Bécancour industrial park, such as those of BASF and General Motors, will make it possible to occupy all the available space.

When it came to power, the Legault government had pledged to find occupants for the largest industrial park in Canada and to ensure that no more projects were missed.

This objective is on the way to being accomplished thanks to investments in the battery sector. For the time being, the last areas that can accommodate large-scale factories are either sold or reserved via purchase options.

“I don’t want people to believe that all the bookings we currently have are going to materialize. We had enough of that (the projects announced then abandoned). But if someone arrives with a big project, it can be difficult given all the reservations we have,” said Donald Martel, CAQ MP for Nicolet-Bécancour.

Of the 70 million square meters that the park has in terms of total area, less than 10 million remain to be developed. These spaces will be intended for smaller SMEs that will offer subcontracting services to large companies.

“For large spaces, we become saturated with these large projects. It’s planned and the will to plan also provides support for subcontracting,” underlined Maurice Richard, CEO of the Bécancour Industrial and Port Park Company.

We do not hide the fact that eventually, major projects will have to be directed to other sites in Quebec.
