The Barcelona Jazz Festival celebrates the end of restrictions with a brilliant poster

Reunion with jazz greats and discovery of emerging figures are combined in the program of the 54th edition of the Voll Damm Barcelona Jazz Festival presented this Thursday. Of all the concerts, the one that the saxophonist Joshua Redman will offer with the members of the magnificent quartet with which he launched the revolutionary ‘MoodSwing in 1994′: the pianist Brad Mehldau, the double bassist Christian McBride, the drummer Brian Blade, all became first figures (October 26). It will be his only performance in Spain. Tickets are on sale at www.jazz.barcelona. “We face this festival with great enthusiasm because it means returning to normality. It will be the first without restrictions and with big names on the jazz scene,” said Tito Ramoneda, promoter of The Project.

The lineup of voices has incorporated two outstanding singers: Cecile McLorin (October 23) with his new album ‘Ghost song’ and to the promising Samara Joy which debuts at the festival (October 24). Their names are added to the already announced returns of Diane Reeves (October 9), Madeleine Peyroux (October 11) Y Melody Gardot (November 29). Also noteworthy is the presence of referents of Brazilian music such as veterans Toquinho (October 27) with his immortal bossa nova and the multi-instrumentalist Hermeto Pascoal (November 2) or the young frontier singer-songwriter Yamadu Coast (November 19).

This year the festival also looks to the Caribbean with performers such as the veteran Cuban guitarist Eliades Ochoa who will celebrate the 25th anniversary of Buena Vista Social Club (December 2), as well as the versatile Dominican pianist Michel Camilo. The latter will present his new project together with the wise guitarist Tomatito, ‘Aranjuez’ (November 11), his particular approach to the most famous work by Joaquin Rodrigo, the ‘Concierto de Aranjuez’ premiered at the Palau de la Música Catalana, which will also host this new version (November 11).

De Cajón, the flamenco part of the festival, currently has three performances: the guitar master Rafael Riqueni (November 26)the transgressive singer Rosario La Tremendita with an acoustic project (November 28) Y Star Morente who will finally present his latest album in Barcelona, ‘Leo’ (December 2).

This year the drummer, vibraphonist, pianist and percussionist Jordi Rossy will be the protagonist of Portrait of the artist. From 11 in the morning and until 2:30 p.m. the Gumbo Jass Banddefenders of the traditional sound of New Orleans; The ones from Barcelona, a group led by Magalí Datzira, Eva Fernández and Lucía Fumero together with percussionist Juan Rodríguez Berbín with their own songs and songs from the Latin American songbook; Y Bratiaa quintet whose project combines ‘manouche’ jazz and Balkan music.
